It was commissioned by the directors of the 2024 Southwest Junior High Wind Symphony, Omar Alonzo and Mallory Vinzant, to commemorate the construction of the new Southwest Junior High School in Springdale, AR. Dobra! takes its name from a phrase commonly spoken amongst my friends in the Czech Republic during a creative musical session. While in the U.S. we might say “Good Jam!” after playing music together, there is no corresponding phrase in the Czech language. Instead, they would simply say “Dobra Marmalada!” which literally meant “Good Marmalade” or “Good Jam!” This piece seeks to capture the exciting rhythms and catchy melodies my friends and I would invent while jamming together all those years ago, and I hope you and your ensemble experience some of the same joy and fulfillment while playing this piece!
